Bumbleride Twin Stroller Giveaway!

As you may know, we are expecting twins in March of 2010 (!), so I was delighted when Angie from the Outfit forwarded me a link to My Organized Chaos, a blog highlighting life with twins and a 5-year-old. Tammi shares info on great kid's products and is featuring an amazing giveaway of a Indie Twin Bumbleride stroller, ending tomorrow, December 1st.

We've been looking at twin strollers and love the Bumbleride stroller, which allows independent adjustment for each seat, including backrests, footrests and canopies.

My final photo shoot for 2009 was at Irvine Regional Park with the adorable Barnes family. Little B dressed up as Max from Where the Wild Things Are, and hid in a cave of tree limbs and baby B picked out his favorite pumpkins. What fun!

Ch-ch-ch-changes! News from Modern Frill!

Much of the summer was spent on the East Coast and upon my return, we found out we were pregnant - with TWINS!

The babies have been busy, dancing and swimming in the belly - keeping me up at night, and rather low-energy and unwell during the day. We are definitely in transition now, looking for a place that can accommodate our quickly growing family, downsizing (ours) and acquiring (theirs), and making some last-minute trips before the little ones make their big appearance.

Consequently, Modern Frill will be taking a hiatus for the time being.

Thanks to you all for your support over the years! I will be spending the next few months focusing on expanding Modern Frill to include new and unique products and designs for kids, with product lines available beginning in early 2010. I'll be updating this blog with news as we go along.

We are truly calling 2010 the year we make contact! Can't wait!!!

What a great day with the P family, who won my gift certificate at the Harvey's event last summer. We had a fabulous day in Seal Beach. The weather was warm, with a touch of that pesky marine layer, and we splashed in the water, built sand castles, and marveled at the ladybugs playing in the sand.

This is our nephew's first trip to Disneyland - he is so happy to finally be home, after the 3-year adoption process. He is already speaking English and learning how to be a big brother. He is absolutely adorable!

Yo Gabba Gabba! DJ Lance Rock - L.A. Book Festival

We had a great time watching DJ Lance Rock and Brobee of Yo Gabba Gabba! perform at the LA Book Festival on Saturday. The weather was perfect and the scores of kid fans were superadorable as they sang along with Pick it Up! and Party in my Tummy.

In August of last year, Congress passed H.R. 4040 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) (PL 110-787), recognizing that so many products geared to children were being made with high levels of lead, unsafe small parts, and toys made with chemicals that made kids sick, in China and other developing countries, which specifically addressed major corporate culprits, such as Hasbro and Mattel. Now, all manufacturers of products geared to children 12 and under must have every component of their designs tested for lead and pthalates, beginning February 10th, 2009.

This targets both the major corporation and the mom selling handmade felt toys on Etsy. But it also targets any product geared to children, from books and clothing (even bibs), to scientific and educational products, even cloth diapers. And it also affects the thrift and consignment stores, which means that any children's product that is in inventory and not tested as of February 10th must be destroyed, even if the product is made with paper, cotton, wool or wood.

In today's economy, where corporate downsizing and bankruptcies force families to find alternative methods to provide basic necessities for their children by shopping thrift and consignment stores and small business owners and independent designers are already struggling to keep their products in the market, this is a disaster of epic proportions, both economically and ecologically. While the spirit of the law is a necessity, the law needs to be amended to prevent unnecessary testing and expense to the small business owner.

Rick Woldenburg has called February 10th, National Bankruptcy Day for a very good reason.

One small business owner, Pamela Kramer, of Happy Panda Baby, a clothing line geared to the non-standard-sized baby, detailed her attempts to evaluate the price of testing of her baby clothing line. The results are staggering! Her blog post is here. She has decided that she will have to discontinue her bib and gown line, as the price of testing is too costly for her to manage.

Pamela is just one of the countless people who will be negatively impacted by the enforcement of this law. Read more stories at the forum Fashion Incubator.

After coming home to cold weather in Long Beach, at last, I am remembering the delightful time we had in Oregon. We picked apples, rode bikes, visited Mt. Hood, enjoyed waterfalls and old schoolhouses. We kicked leaves and played with helium balloons. Miss you all!

Mr. A and Family - a day in the park!

What a great time I had, following Mr. A and his delightful family as they played at the park! Elmo was hidden in my camera bag for safekeeping, while we slid down the slide and ran through the leaves. Mr. A loves to play with sticks almost as much as he likes to play with Elmo. (Aren't kids funny that way?! I was visiting some friends who report their kids' favorite toy lately is tupperware.) We really had a lot of fun!

The lovely Whitney of Bel Kai Designs and I Know A Mom sent along a tag challenge: 7 facts about me.

Here goes:

1.) Most people have a sweet tooth - I have a salt tooth, anything will do - pretzels, a little dash on watermelon (Yum!) and have you tried this? Or the White Chocolate with Black Sea Salt from Scoops?
2.) I bought a bouncy ball filled with water and pink glitter for my 3-year-old friend, Elliette, for her birthday - then bought one for myself - i'm completely entranced by the swirly sparkliness.
3.) We moved four times before I was in kindergarten, and moved 14 times before I entered college. I've lived up and down the West Coast, including Anchorage, AK, and a yearlong stint in Chicago. I've lived in Portland, OR most recently and now we've settled into Long Beach for the long haul (going on 5 years - it's a personal record!). And no, we weren't a military family, just restless, I guess.
4.) My sister and I both majored in English Literature in college - we are book nerds.
5.) I played Juliet in a college production of Romeo and Juliet, which surprises people because I'm known as being "quiet".
6.) I am a big fan of "fantastic" films - Amelie, Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy, Mirrormask - we just watched the Fall - such incredible visuals! And I've been enjoying Pushing Daisies (if you've never seen it, give it a chance - it's heading for cancellation.)
7.) I was born 2 months premature and weighed 2 lbs, 9 oz. The feet prints from my birth certificate are tiny, tiny, tiny.

Grace Brethren Church of Long Beach will host its 13th Annual Community Carnival: A Party in the City! from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3601 Linden Avenue. Admission is free. There will be game booths, a live DJ, inflatable attractions, face painting, animal balloons and LOTS! of candy. Food available for purchase from delicious Baja Sonora and Chick-Fil-A.

Yes, it is a season of birthdays, including mine! And I LOVE to photograph kid parties - Modern Frill will be presenting a new birthday package in 2009. I was delighted to photograph Mr. A's 1st birthday, and now his new baby sister just turned 1 - how time does fly! It is such a treasure to be able to participate in watching these little ones grow and be a part of their lives.
